TOP 3 WAYS For Improving Food Photography
1) Shoot with a soft light
In my opinion a soft back light is ideal for food shots. It makes the light shine through the herbs and food in a beautiful way. You can create this lighting with a window or a flash. If the shadows get to hard, soften them with a white curtain or – if using a flash – a soft box. I often meet the backlight with a reflector in the front.
If you are outside and the light from the sun is too strong the best way is to shoot in the shadow. If you want to lead in a little spot of light – use a reflector.

1) Shoot warm and fresh food
When food is not warm you immediately experience it as artificial and strange. If the food looks cold, heat the surface with a kitchen blow torch or re-heat it and plate again. Work quickly – herbs could die in two seconds when they are on top of warm food. When shooting a fresh salad – wait with mixing it and pouring over the dressing until the last second before shooting, otherwise it will just look wet.

3) Shoot with a wide aperture, a short depth of field
That will bring more focus to the food and it also creates a more emotional atmosphere. If you are shooting in natural light this choice of aperture also gives you more freedom to shoot without a tripod. A smaller aperture lengthens the shutter speed which practically results in that the photos could get blurry if you move just a little when shooting.
